Photos (Day 4)

Dear S1-04
It has been my pleasure to be assisting and working with Mrs Nair to look after your class over the past four days :)

We have all gone through many activities and events together, perspired profusely and stepped in muddy puddles.

I had a good experience with all of you last night and felt really happy to finally see you all starting to work as a team before we went for our night hike. Hope you all felt the same way :p

I hope to hear wonderful news from Mrs Nair about how 1-04 is growing and developing together as a team (^_^) Visit your classmates' blogs!

Cherish and treasure your experiences and especially your classmates in SST because you are writing the history of SST together as pioneers.

Warmest Regards
Mr Richard Koh

Kimberly's group

  • What are some of your observations about the environment and people?
  • We saw a couple of elderly people sitting at the void deck. They looked bored and were pitiful. There were lots of trees around clementi. However, there were lots of cars therefore, it was not pleasant to smell.
  • What were some opportunities you think SST would able to contribute to the community?
  • SST can help the Autism Association and Orange Valley. We can find out more about the needs of the people there. Thus we can be more effective when we organise trips to Orange Valley and Autism Association to help them.
  • How can we benefit from serving the community?
  • By serving the community, we wil be prepared for the future ahead and for working life. We will also learn to have empathy for those who are less fortunate.
  • Which school value encourages us to learn beyond SST?
  • The school value "Expanding Our Learning Networks".

The Amazing Race - Group Reflection

We observed that there were a lot of elderlies in this big and old estate. There were some forested area especially at the permanent site and some parts of the estate is smelly and dirty.

Some of the opportunities would be helping out at the nursing home, kindergarten and autism association. We could also clean up the estate and educate the people at Clementi so as not to litter. After cleaning it up,we could plant more trees so we can add to the greenery.

We can benefit from doing community work as we get to feel the satisfaction after helping people. Sometimes the elderlies just need someone to talk to as they feel very lonely in the nursing home. At the kindergarten, maybe we could teach the little kids. They will look up to us,'big brothers and sisters'.  We could help out the autism centre so the kids there would not feel that other kids look down on them.

The school value is Expanding Our Learning Networks.

I think everyone can contribute to achieving the school vision by paying more attention to know more about new things in science and technology from parents, magazines and newspaper to share with classmates eg. environmental science and medical science. Hence, I have drawn some items that links to science like the recycle bag, energy saving bulb and test tubes. I have also drawn a first aid sign and a packet of medicine that is named exelon which can help to slow down Alzheimer's disease and the elderly person to represent the old people and the sick in the world that links to medical science. The arrow shows what changes there will be after everyone does the items mentioned above-that is School of Science and Technology will be a global institute of Science and technology.

    5 Jan: #4 MacBridge Activity 2 - Episodes of Induction @ SST

On Week 2 Friday (15 January 2010), the "Badge Ceremony" will be held to mark the end of the Secondary 1 Orientation. Your parents will be invited to attend the ceremony.

Every student is going to put together your 2 weeks of orientation experiences in a presentation (created with KeyNote) to share with your parents your experiences.

    Discuss as a class...
    • What would you suggest what areas you could include in the presentation?
    • How are you going to organise your experiences?
    • Is there any specific "visual" requirements/elements that must be included in the presentation (e.g. video clips)?
    • Should the presentation be set to auto-run?

Planning & Designing a KeyNote Presentation

    • Good presentations start with strong ideas, creative writing and a thorough outline (of your ideas).
    • Think First, Design Next, then Present
    • Based your past experiences in creating presentations and blogs, what are some "Dos and Don'ts" that you would suggest to the class when designing a presentation with a good look-and-feel
    • Let's Plan!!!

5 Jan: #3 MacBridge Activity 2 - Getting to know the Neighbourhood

You are going to the following places (checkpoints) in tomorrow's Amazing Race.
    • Blk 437 Opposite Clementi Bus interchange
    • Big Bookshop
    • Swimming Pool
    • SST Permanent Site
    • Clementi Police Divisional HQ

To help you identify the places and plan for your expedition, the teachers have taken photographs of these places, however, they are not labeled. Click HERE to see the photos.

    Your Task

    1. You are going to work in teams of 4 to 5.
    2. Each team will attempt to map out at least 4 checkpoints (see below* for more details).
    3. Upon completion, the leader will email the link to the map to loh_kwai_yin1.2010s104@blogger.com . The hyperlink will be posted to this blog.
    4. Put down your team members' names as the title of the mail so that we know who submitted the post.
    5. You may compare the maps by the various teams to agree on the actual location you will be visiting on the next day.

*As a team, you are going to collaborate by each contributing information to a common map.

    • Look at the Photos given and decide what-and-where are these places. There might be more than one photo for each location.
    • The group leader will create a map and share it out with the rest of the members. (You may refer to the "How-to Collaborate in Google Map" guide in the Student blog)
    • On the same map, each member will identify the exact location assigned.
    • He/She will tag the location with the photo(s) and the name of the place.
    • All members must contribute to tagging the map.

Bridge Building Activity Debrief: Name of Team

Our group had collaborated quite well. We each had a task to do, and we did them properly. Extra time was used helping others in the group with their tasks. One thing we could have not wasted was the time used for planning. Luckily, there were no conflicts, and we communicated properly. With everyone's different ideas compromised to one, our group had come up with the design on the last minute. If we had actually made better use of the time, maybe we might have done better.

Bridge Building Activity Debrief: Millie's Group

The type of bridge we worked on was a swing bridge. We used strings to pull the bridge to one side to make it swing 180 degrees. When planning we compromised and came to the best possible idea we could think of. While making the bridge, our group was very cooperative and we lent a helping hand to each other.

    debrief for bridge building

the collaboration in our group was decent, though it could have been better if we had collaborated better by listening to each other's opinions and by working as a team.
the bridge was the thing that worked well in the team.
our team work could have been better.
we could work as a whole team and not do solo work.
